On the Caribbean side we find lots of tasty options including:
pan bon (a rum spiked fruitcake), Rice and Beans (not to be confused with Gallo pinto) prepared with coconut milk, Patí is a popular dish in the Caribbean area, and you can hear people selling it saying “Patí, Patí!” out in the streets. It is a delicious treat, and you will probably not be happy with just one. This particular dish has roots in Jamaica, and it is a mixture of traditional English pastry making combined with the ingredients that Africans brought from that continent as seeds. It is a pastry filled with meat, spices and spicy pimentos. Whole fish with patacones is another favorite which includes a delicious fish prepared in the Caribbean style and with a side of patacones (fried green plantain slices). The abundance of fresh seafood on both coasts offers the perfect fresh ingredients for the best seafood soups and main dishes. We also cannot forget the famous “gallos” which are like tacos and have some type of meat or picadillo and of course you must try the chicharrón (crispy fried pork rinds and delicious chunks of pork meat) or the chorizo (sausage) or potato gallos.
