Costa Rica´s Best Guide Online Magazine
Some dishes are prepared according to the holiday season such as the pork tamales or eggnog (Rompope) for Christmas or the chiverre (a squash like veggie) and bean tamales prepared for Easter Week. And we cannot leave out desserts, like torrejas (bread and tapa de dulce), the prestiños, cajetas, filled yams, mazamorra, tres leches, arroz con leche (rice with milk), sweet corn tamales, and honeys made from coconut, chiverre, and jocote. When it comes to native drinks, you can also see the mixture of cultures. From the indigenous “Vino de Coyol” (coyol wine), to the very well known “Rompope” . Thanks to the abundance of tropical fruits available year-round, it is very commonplace to find cas, mora, pineapple, guanábana, and papaya drinks just to name a few. There are also very Costa Rican drinks like resbaladera, horchata, agua de sapo (toad water), agua dulce (sweet water), and tamarindo. And if you are out drinking do ask for the Chifrijo dish which is a Costa Rican invention and includes a variety of tasty ingredients including pork, avocado, rice, red beans, pico de gallo (mixture of tomato, onion, cilantro, lemon and salt) and English sauce (optional) served with tortilla chips. So be sure to try all these gastronomic delights for yourself!
