Located in the Northern region, the town of La Fortuna is the main gateway to the Arenal Volcano and Lake areas. Originally a laid back town dependant on agriculture, La Fortuna came into the spotlight after the violent eruption by Arenal Volcano in 1968. Several small villages were buried by this eruption after 400 years of being dormant and this lava flow and outstanding nighttime fiery show attracted tourists from all over the world and thus began the transformation of La Fortuna into a top destination. The underground lava also created many bubbling hot springs that remain a main attraction of the area to this day. Some are free and many are paid and developed by resorts.
