An awesome place located on the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula is the Reserva Natural Absoluta Cabo Blanco. It is a mixture of green forests that reach out to beaches that are mostly deserted. It encompasses 12 square km. of land and 17 square km. of the surrounding ocean. A moist microclimate encourages the growth of evergreen forests which is something not found in the rest of Nicoya with its typically dry tropical forests. The various offshore islands are favorite nesting places for a variety of bird species. The absolute in the name of this reserve is because before the late 1980 ´ s visitors were not allowed. Since then some trails have opened up but the emphasis continues to be one of limiting the environmental impact. This reserve was originally founded by a Swedish Danish couple, Olof Nicolas Wessberg and Karen Mogensen, who came to Montezuma in the 1950 ´ s. They were responsible for convincing the Costa Rican Government of the benefits of establising a National Parks system. As a result of the efforts of these conservationists, the Cabo Blanco Absolute Reserve was established in 1963. Sadly, Mr. Wessberg was murdered in 1975 during a campaign in the Osa Peninsula to increase and protect this ecologically rich area from the unmitigated greed of those who would clear cut the entire area for profit if they could. This couple are true heroes, not only of Costa Rica but of all humanity. Thanks in no small part, to their efforts, today Costa Rica has over 26% of its total area as protected Parks and Reserves. The latest added to this total in 2021 was the new Reserva Biol ó gica del Bicentenario de la Rep ú blica – P á jaro Campana in Coto Brus, with 5075 hectares (over 11,000 acres). An example for the rest of the World to follow. SINAC, the National System of Conservation Areas is the Government entity that oversees this massive amount of protected areas throughout the country. Costa Rica has also managed to achieve between 98 and 100% renewable energy for the last 5 years! The only country in the world to do this.
