INSURANCE IN COSTA RICA
In the past, and for approximately 88 years, there was an insurance monopoly in Costa Rica. During that period, only the National Insurance Institute (INS) was authorized to sell insurance in our country, under a strictly social sense. It was not until September 2008 that Law 8653, called the Insurance Market Regulatory Law, was approved, it was following the requirements of the then recently approved Free Trade Agreement and global currents on globalization. Already in 2010, the Costa Rican government definitively opened the insurance market, and that is how insurers from countries such as Spain, the USA and Panama, and others, began to register.

All insurance companies, agents, brokers and products are regulated by SUGESE, which is the government department which oversees the insurance market. Undoubtedly, with this opening, the great beneficiary has been the insurance consumer, since the product, prices and service have improved considerably. An example of this is that to date there are 13 registered insurers, which sell all lines of insurance.
Currently there is a wide variety of products in the Costa Rican market, there is talk of around 600 distributed within the different insurers. But it is clear that each coverage has its price.
