The Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels is a Catholic temple in the city of Cartago, Costa Rica and the main sanctuary of Costa Rica, dedicated to Our Lady of the Angels. The Basilica is located in the same place where, according to popular tradition, a humble young "mulatto" named Juana Pereira, from the marginal neighborhood known as La Puebla de los Pardos, found in 1635 on a large rock, a stone image of the Virgin of the Angels, an invocation through which the faithful soon attributed numerous miracles from God, and whose devotion surpassed the borders of Cartago reaching the entire territory of Costa Rica. Today, the Sanctuary of Cartago is the main center of religious pilgrimage in Costa Rica for the Catholic people of Costa Rica and even Central America, especially on the occasion of the feast of the Virgin of the Angels, which is celebrated on August 2, and is an official paid holiday.
