the benefit of a general liking of ex pats by the population and the absence of an army and friendly police. However, those demographics have changed over the past 5 years and especially Post-Pandemic, with so many negative events happening in North America, both man-made and those made by the changing forces of nature and with more people and companies open to the idea of working from home (even if that home is in another country as long as the internet is fast and reliable enough) a new type of ex-pat has developed. Some of the more adventurous are temporary (usually singles and couples) who will only stay from a few months to a couple of years and move on to explore new surroundings, but many are looking for a new home, singles, couples, or families with children.
Many of these more permanent newcomers, which still include many retirees, have a solid plan in place and the finances to back up that plan. Some have an online job that pays well, some sold off businesses and homes and are looking to buy homes and businesses (or start a new business – we will cover that ins and outs of that topic in a separate article) here and those who are retired can count on at least a monthly social security check which can allow for decent living here on $1500 or more per month (see the Cost of Living article in the magazine for details on various budgets) as long as you are realistic about your choices of lifestyle and location. Do not expect to live in a Penthouse overlooking the beach while eating out every day and having a good old time on $1500 per month! It is not happening.
