JUAN SANTAMARIA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT ( SJO )

Built to replace the previous airport located in downtown San Jose ´ s Parque La Sabana. Inaugurated in May 1958 it was named "Aeropuerto Internacional el Coco" after its location of the same name in the province of Alajuela. It was later renamed in honor of Juan Santamar í a, a national hero in the 1856 war against William Walker and his Filibusters. There is another International Airport in Liberia, Guanacaste but the San Jos é Airport offers

more direct flights including to North and Central America and Europe, but also flies to cities in South America and the Caribbean. Located at an altitude of 3022 ft. this, the most important airport in Costa Rica, receiving during 2022 a total of 4,665,946 incoming and outgoing passengers. This is equivalent to reaching 90% of the pre-pandemic numbers in 2019. The 1st semester of 2023 it registered the largest amount of passengers received in the last 14 years.
