T he story of the Hotel Cristal Ballena be gan when my parents, Waldemar and Her ta Steiner, first got to know Costa Rica and its warmhearted people on a trip in 1992. Somewhere within every person, there re sides a destiny, a dream, an unfulfilled life’s wish, and they were able to make it true. On the Pacific Ocean, near Playa Ballena, Uvita, they discovered this special place as their personal paradise. Situated in a tropical gar den, on a hilltop between the Pacific Ocean and rain forest-covered mountains, the unique position allows breathtaking ocean views while a cooling breeze is coming from the mountains. Especially the daily sunsets were unforgettable. How has Costa Rica’s culture and environ ment influenced your business and per sonal life? When my parents discovered Costa Rica, I was still working in Austria and observed the project with interest on occasional trips and helped as much as I could at the time. This country with its unbelievably beautiful na ture, its people, and its special “Pura Vida” lifestyle, gradually inspired and captivated me. In 2007, my wife Angelika and I decid ed to spend a whole year in Costa Rica. That year has now turned into almost 20 and we are still enjoying it to this day. Sustainable tourism is becoming increas ingly important, as it is the only way to en sure harmonious coexistence with the beau ty of nature in the long term. Costa Rica with its small size, equivalent to 0.03% of the land surface of the earth is the refuge of more than 3% percent of the planet’s biodi What inspired leaving Austria, your home country, and starting a new life in Costa Rica? How did you end up choosing the South Pacific Coast for your Hotel and Home? Costa Rica has developed incredibly over the last 20 years. However, the town of Uvita and the surrounding area on the South Pa cific coast was still a blank spot on the map. There was hardly any electricity, the most beautiful road on the Pacific coast today, Costanera Sur (Ruta 34), was still a gravel road in our area and so there was always plenty of adventure to be had. The region was once barely developed for tourism and was considered an insider tip among tour ists. Today, Uvita has developed into a dy namically growing town that still retains its natural charm. Thanks to strict building reg ulations and environmentally friendly laws, the region is being developed sustainably without excessive tourist overgrowth. What were the biggest challenges you faced in finding adequate land and build ing a luxury boutique hotel business in Costa Rica? Back then, the property market was nowhere near as competitive as it is today, and the re gion was correspondingly underdeveloped. Transport posed a major challenge - espe cially in the rainy season, when the roads were often barely passable. The only fax ma chine in Uvita was in a small hardware store. Anyone could send messages there, which were then posted on the notice board for all to see. Communication was cumbersome, but it still worked in its own way. It worked somehow “Pura Vida”. There was no talk of the Internet back then - a term that was still completely unknown here. Today, however, we have a high-speed fiber optic internet connection directly to the hotel. The big gest challenge for us, however, was to build and equip the hotel. Nowadays, there are experienced construction companies and qualified craftsmen in Uvita who make such projects much easier. What advice would you give to other en trepreneurs considering a similar venture in Costa Rica? It is important to understand the local cul ture and familiarize yourself with local cus toms. Take your time and approach things with ease. Many things work differently here than we are used to in our home countries. This requires a rethink - something that is often easier said than done. Choose your business partners carefully and stay as per sonally involved in your projects as possible. In my opinion, working with trustworthy people - and finding them - is the key to the success of any business project in this country. How do you see the future of sustain able tourism in Costa Rica and your role within it?
versity. This country has a serious commitment to the preservation of natural and cultural resources, offering visitors a model of tourism that respects the environment. How do you ensure that your hotel operates in an environmentally responsible and sustainable way? Cristal Ballena has been participating since 2010 in the CST pro gram (Certification for Sustainable Tourism - CST) and we are proud that we have been awarded with the high level of 4 leaves. What are some of the most rewarding aspects of your experience building and running this business? One of the greatest pleasures of running our hotel and restaurant is the daily interaction with our guests, offering us precious oppor tunities to connect with people and cultures from across the globe. Seeing our team members grow professionally and personally has been especially gratifying. Many started with little experience but have developed into skilled hospitality professionals who take genu ine pride in their work. What are some of the unique experiences your boutique hotel offers guests that they can’t find anywhere else? The hotel’s unique hilltop position between the Pacific Ocean and rainforest-covered mountains provides breathtaking panoramic ocean views and spectacular daily sunsets. Our “Pura Vida” Restaurant, pop ular with both locals and visitors, is open to the public and offers in ternational cuisine with an Austrian flair. Guests can enjoy refreshing drinks while taking in the spectacular ocean views during breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Our Cristal Ballena Pool Club is another popular attraction, offering day passes to visitors who wish to experience our beautiful pool and garden facilities. Here, you can combine swimming, dining, and bird watching all in one location.” The hotel features its own private Cristal Ballena Rainforest Trail where guests can observe howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, coatimundis, and diverse jun gle wildlife. The property’s location attracts toucans and various bird species that guests can observe from their rooms and the pool area. Hotel Cristal Ballena is a top accommodation for bird watching and wildlife holidays in the South Pacific lowlands of Costa Rica. We are part of the Costa Rica Birding Hot Spots, a group of hotels in the country for bird watching, located in the main Important Bird Areas for conservation (IBA’s) declared by BirdLife International in Costa Rica. While birding is a highlight, the South Pacific coast also offers exciting whale-watching opportunities. The waters off this region, particularly around Marino Ballena National Park, are known for their incredible marine life. How has your perspective on life changed since moving to Costa Rica and starting this business? Living here has opened our eyes to new ways of seeing the world and taught us different ways to find happiness and success in life. The reward comes from doing work we truly enjoy and seeing its positive impact. What are your hopes for the future of your hotel and its impact on the local community and environment? We are currently enhancing our natural gardens and park landscape through an exciting new development project. By incorporating carefully selected native plants, we are creating an even more attrac tive habitat for local wildlife, birds, and butterflies. The addition of a planned lagoon will further transform our grounds into an even more
enchanting natural paradise. This project demonstrates our deep connection to nature and promotes sustainable tourism through its eco-friendly approach. We hope that this positive development benefits our staff, the local economy, and the entire region. What activities do you and your wife enjoy doing in your free time? We are fortunate to live in this wonderful hotel property and en joy its tranquility and natural surroundings. For several years, I have pursued nature and bird photography as a hobby. A personal project particularly close to my heart is the artistic transformation of my extensive wildlife and nature documentation, all captured in the surrounding area and on our hotel grounds. I aim to incorpo rate these authentic encounters with nature into the hotel’s design through digital art and fine art prints, creating an atmosphere for our guests that reflects our deep connection to local nature - mov ing beyond standardized hotel artwork. While nature remains in our hearts, we also enjoy our trips back to our home country Austria, where we reunite with family and love exploring Europe. Looking back with 20/20 vision, what if anything would you have done differently after arriving in Costa Rica? Everyone experiences moments in life where, looking back, we could have made different choices. Yet even missed opportunities can teach us valuable lessons and help us look positively toward the future. Part of Costa Rica’s “Pura Vida” philosophy is welcoming each new day with joy and making the most of it. Come Experience Paradise with the Steiners. We invite you to visit us personally at Hotel Cristal Bal lena, where authentic hospitality meets natural beauty. As your hosts, we’d be delighted to share our slice of paradise and our experiences of life in Costa Rica with you. Immerse yourself in the tranquility of our ocean-view property while enjoying exquisite dining at our Pura Vida Restaurant. Let us arrange exciting tours to discover the region’s natural wonders, from whale watching to rainforest adventures. Whether you’re dreaming of making this paradise your home or exploring options for a personal Plan B, we’re here to
share our experience and connect you with trusted local professionals who can guide your journey. Join us for an unforgettable stay where every sunset tells a new story, and every guest becomes part of our extended
family. Contact us to plan your visit and discover why so many have chosen to make this magical cor ner of Costa Rica their home. Andreas Steiner

Digital Nomad
The Perfect Lifestyle Choice in Today´s World
What is a Digital Nomad? Well for starters, it is a totally new category of Traveler/Resident. They arrive like a tourist but generally prefer to travel during less crowded months and want to be fully immersed in their new location´s culture and day to day living just like someone who moves here as a resident. Their stay can generally be from 6 to 12 months and sometimes longer if they become enamored with the place. They are concerned with finding a place with good to excellent Internet service so that they work efficiently and constantly. They generally make a good income and thus have disposable income to spend during their time at a new location,
thus contributing to the general economy. This is a trend that has been growing steadily and will continue to do so and while the pandemic severely limited the travel choices in the short run, in the middle and long run it has helped to accelerate this trend as many companies realize that working from home, wherever that may be, is a much better option in many ways for both the employee as well as for the employer. There are of course many Digital Nomads who work for themselves and do not actually have a formal employer.

The beauty of this workstyle is the absolute freedom to choose where you will work from so that you can be on a permanent vacation where at the very least you have nights and weekends to explore and enjoy your current destination.A Digital Nomad only needs his computer, a good Wi-Fi connection and an up-to-date passport and the money needed to sustain this lifestyle which should be coming from his or her online work. No longer are you tied to the four walls of an office environment. Here in Costa Rica, you could be working from your terrace in the jungle or forest while the monkeys and birds watch you and wonder what you are doing or from a beachside café after an early morning of surfing, swimming or running. It is an almost perfect working lifestyle! Costa Rica also sees this as a good opportunity for the reactivation of the economy and offers a similar time zone for North American related work in addition to all the other advantages of living in Costa Rica. With this new type of Traveler in mind, a new Digital Nomad Law has been passed as follows:
BENEFITS FOR THE DIGITAL NOMAD
One Year Visa which can be extended. No Income Tax.
Free importation of needed Professional equipment-materials. No vehicles included. Current Driver´s License is fully valid during Nomads stay. Permission to easily open local bank accounts.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DIGITAL NOMAD
